Humpty Dumpty's Great Fall
by Craig Meibers
Introduction:
Everyone knows the nursery ryhme of humpty dumpty and his great fall where he cracks his head. But we are here to stop the crack. The students will be giving Mr. Humpty Dumpty a new wardrobe where he will have no worries for when he falls again.
Task:
The goal for this lesson is to have students successfully create a shield for their egg and then drop their egg from the second floor and have it land without breaking. The students will have to predict whether or not their egg will have enough protection to land from the drop and not break or crack at all. The following is the process that the students will go through:
1) Students will get into groups of three to four, one student will be the leader (holder of the egg and final descision maker), another will be the organizer ( making sure everything is being done right and on time), and finally one child will be the creator ( deciding on how the egg will be wrapped)
2) Each group will then decide to pick four pieces of material of whatever they want that will shield the egg
3) Students will then be given a day to collect these items
4) The items each group has obtain will then start to wrap the items around the egg in anyway they choose they feel will protect the egg the best
5) After each group has successfully wrapped their eggs they will then go outside to where each group will one at a time dropp their eggs
6) After each group has dropped their eggs, one member from each group will go downstairs and get their group's egg
7) Afer returning to class each group will unwrap their egg and find out whether or not their egg survived the fall (if humpy dumpty survived his great fall)
8)Each group will then report on what happened to their egg and give a brief description on why they feel their egg survived or not.
9)Finally the groups will draw a comic strip of what would happen to humpty dumpty if when he fell he did not bump his head and instead was just fine. First the groups will think of how the comic strip will go. Then when the group has decided on their strip they will go on a computer and make a slideshow on powerpoint. The groups will also be allowed to go out on the web to find pictures or go on windows paint and make their own pictures.
10) Then the students will present their slideshow to the whole class.
Evaluation:
Conclusion:
At the end of the project the students should of been able to find out if the predictions they made were correct or not. Also each group will then present their comic strip of the new nursery rhyme of humpty dumpty when instead of bumping his head he was ok and the king's horsemen were not able to put him together again.
